Mexico

I was six the first time I saw Mexico, and the colors and music of that trip have stayed with me ever since. Mexico shows its heart openly. Papel picado hangs over the plazas, mariachi trumpets drift out of cantinas, and the markets are stacked with chiles, cacao, and flowers so bright they look painted. It is also one of the most biodiverse countries on Earth and has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other country in the Americas. Two very different coastlines frame it: the wild Pacific with its sea lions and surf breaks, and the Caribbean with its reefs, cenotes, and Maya ruins above turquoise water.

Mexico City is where I love to begin. It was built on the island capital of the Aztecs, sits high enough to stay springlike most of the year, and has more than 150 museums, plus a food scene that runs from street-corner taco stands to some of the most celebrated tables in the world. From there, I build journeys out to the coast that suits you, whether that means the desert meeting the sea in Baja or a lagoon of seven blues on the Caribbean side. Wherever you go, you'll come home knowing Mexico well beyond the resort strip.
