Costa Rica
Costa Rica holds roughly five percent of the world's biodiversity in a country smaller than West Virginia. It was one of my specialties for six years, and I still marvel at how much life fits inside its borders: two oceans, a spine of smoking volcanoes, and cloud forests so thick with orchids and moss that the trees seem to grow gardens of their own.
That density is the best part. You can wake to howler monkeys calling across the canopy, soak in volcano-warmed rivers by afternoon, and walk a moonlit beach as a sea turtle comes ashore to nest. This is also a country that chose its path with intention, abolishing its army in 1948 and protecting more than a quarter of its land, and you feel that commitment in every lodge, guide, and village you visit. Pura vida here is a greeting, a goodbye, and a whole way of living. I love building journeys that cross the country's many climates, from misty highland mornings to warm Caribbean evenings, so you come home knowing Costa Rica well beyond the postcard beaches.
