Argentina

Two riders on horseback crossing golden Patagonian steppe toward distant hills, with the greeting ¡Besos desde Argentina, che!
A view between a horse's ears down a narrow trail through golden grassland toward distant mountains.
A vintage-style postcard with a handwritten note about mate, the Andes, and asado, sketches of mountains and a gaucho on horseback, and an Argentina stamp, with travel tips typed on the right.

A Note from the Field:

Argentina runs from subtropical rainforest to the tip of the continent, and every region feels like its own country. In the north, Iguazú thunders through the jungle and the painted canyons of Salta and Jujuy glow red, gold, and green. The heart of the country belongs to Buenos Aires, the open pampas, and the vineyards of Mendoza stretched beneath the Andes. Farther south, Patagonia opens into turquoise lakes, jagged peaks, and glaciers that calve into milky blue water, all the way down to Ushuaia at the end of the world.

Argentina comes alive through its rituals. Long dinners that start at ten, an asado tended for hours over glowing coals, a tango that begins after midnight in a neighborhood dance hall, and mate passed hand to hand among friends. I love weaving these moments into the journey, so you leave having tasted, danced, and lingered your way through the country rather than simply seeing it.

Pair Argentina with Chile

A deep blue lake curving around forested peninsulas with mountains on the horizon in Argentina's Lake District.

Patagonia belongs to both countries, and some of my favorite journeys cross the border. Sail the lakes between Bariloche and Puerto Varas, or pair the glaciers of El Calafate with the granite towers of Torres del Paine.
